From 1986 to 1995, Acura produced the Legend car model for sale in the United States, Canada and parts of China; whereas, Honda made the Legend for sale in other markets. The vehicle model was available as both a sedan and a coupe. The sedan was extremely successful for Acura, as it was the top-spec sedan that Acura manufactured. In fact, it was one of the initial cars to be sold below the brand name Acura. In 1996, the Legend was substituted by the Acura 3.5RL in North America, which was a redesigned version of the Honda Legend. The Legend however is still available under the same name and sold by Honda in various other places of the world. While in production, the vehicle found numerous accolades including JD power from 1987 until 1990. Car and Driver located the vehicle on their top ten list three years in a row. Furthermore, Motor Trend marked car "import car of the year" in 1987.

The Legend received such appreciation for its flawless finish and never failing reliability. The vehicle boasted a multivalve V6 engine, 4wheel disc brakes, changeable length intake manifold, a double wishbone suspension and an information system that monitored scheduled maintenance intervals and better yet, provided the driver with fuel effectiveness information. The impressive Legend was originated in cooperation with the Rover group, who sold the vehicle under the Rover name in both the UK and France. Japan eagerly welcomed the Legend for its navigational system, which in 1990 was the first car released with such a feature. However, the system did not at the time rely on satellites, but rather used accelerometers.
