Electricity is the lifeblood of international continued existence, and commerce. And one day it may become the fuel basis for all transportation vehicles.

But before it can reach that level, companies must prove that they can generate cleaner basis of energy.

China’s Electric Car Drive: Imposing, But Not sufficient

Rapid motorization in China has made it the world’s main auto market, and government support for plug-in vehicles has made the nation a aim for the electric vehicle ambitions on show at this week’s Shanghai auto show.

In a statement about today’s report, Ede Ijjasz, sustainable growth manager for the World Bank in China and Mongolia, called China’s plan to invest $15 billion in vehicle electrification “extraordinary and second to not any.

Yet according to Shomik Mehndiratta, who commissioned and supervised the report last year as senior transport expert in the World Bank’s sustainable development unit for China and Mongolia, Chinese mayors have been “doing what U.S. mayors did from the 1960s.” They are usually “trying to house” growing numbers of vehicles by structure infrastructure and roads. “That cannot be the only reply to motorization.” It’s also important to run the shift, he said, and treat electric vehicles as only one piece of a system that incorporates car-free modes of transportation.

Mehndiratta said his team’s overriding goal is to help China and Chinese cities get better their transport, often centering on walking, cycling, and public transport. “More and more our role is how to deal with climate change,” he said.

When it comes to “green transport,” Chinese leaders “think almost wholly about going toward EVs,” said Mehndiratta. That is something electric vehicles do not offer. As a result, the study authors say “a new framework for maximizing GHG benefits” must be developed in order for China to realize the full emission benefits possible with electric vehicles.

The report recognizes several areas where the World Bank could work with China’s central and local governments to support deployment of “new energy” vehicles, and make the most of their environmental benefits. For example, the World Bank’s knowledge with large-scale infrastructure projects could be put toward development of a carbon emission price and monitoring system, as well as standards for vehicle charging equipment. World Bank loans could help finance infrastructure and a “comprehensive electric vehicle-ecosystem” pilot project that would include investment in battery “swap” stations, batteries, and development of software and hardware for managing loads on the grid caused by an influx of plug-in cars.

Increasing trucks’ use of parkway under revision

State transportation officials are examining whether to allow big commercial trucks to journey the Garden State Parkway north of Exit 105 in Tinton Falls, a section they are banned from using.

“We’re having the folks at the Turnpike look at it to see what the limits are, like the in the clouds heights and loads and asphalt road wear and tear,” Transportation Commissioner James Simpson said. “We’re looking at it all, but we have no answer yet.”

One major roadblock has been removed, with the transformation of the Driscoll Bridge and construction of a new third span in 2009.
“The old bridge . . . wasn’t physically capable of handling [the weight of] commercial trucks,” said John O’Hern, the authority’s deputy executive director.

Also to be careful is the effect of gainful trucks on the pavement and bridges and whether the overpasses are high enough, said Veronique Hakin, executive director.

Generally, older parkways, such as those in New York, were designed especially for cars and have bridges with clearances that won’t house a commercial truck or tractor-trailer. That is the case with some of the original Garden State Parkway stone overpasses with arches in Middlesex and Union Counties.

“There are whole bunches of subject we have to get to,” Simpson said. “The first is: If you wanted to, could you? If you could, would you want to? We haven’t gotten to could you.”

If the communications allows it, one factor in favor of commercial truck traffic on the parkway is that it is a money maker, said Neil Gray, director of governmental affairs for the International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association.

“It pays proportionally more than cars do because of the weights,” Gray said.

The driver of a car traveling the 113-mile length of the New Jersey Turnpike would pay a $9.05 cash toll, compared with $37.15 for a six-axle truck.

Another consideration is using the parkway to take traffic off other highways.

“I’d think people are looking at traffic flows and saying we have a logical link” by using the parkway, Gray said. “A big part has to be seems at regional traffic flows and how to move that traffic.” Trucks crossing the Raritan River now must use Route 35, Route 9, or the turnpike.

“We’re trying to get all the capacity we can out of the system,” Simpson said. “I asked about that a while ago as a reliever to other roadways.”

Japan’s automaker hold up will spread, report says

Japanese automakers are just one of the industries exaggerated by the earthquake and tsunami that strike the island nation this month, potentially leading to longer waits for some new car buyers. Already the effects are waving around the world, as shortages of key automotive parts have spread from Japan and caused, for example, Toyota to halt overtime operations at its 14 North America plants.

Scotia Economics Senior Economist Carlos Gomes says a domino effect is inevitable considering that Japan is both the world’s second-largest vehicle manufacturer and second-largest auto parts exporter, with many of those suppliers located in the stricken northeastern region of Japan.

“The major risk to the global auto industry, including non-Japanese automakers, lies in the potential for auto parts shortages globally and its impact on the global supply chain, due to delays in the resumption of component deliveries by Japanese suppliers,” Gomes said in a statement.

Besides electronic components, Gomes points out that other components sourced from the region can’t be found anywhere else.
Supplies of a shiny, patented pigment called Xirallic, for example, are running short due to damage at the one plant that produces it. As a result, Ford and Chrysler have already announced they will stop offering certain shades of paint to new car buyers.

The North American automobile industry should climate the storm better than some other markets, however, as 80 per cent of the approximately 3,000 parts used to bring together the average vehicle in Canada and the U.S. are made domestically.

In its place, the report warns that the crash will be the greatest in Asia, with Thailand pinnacle the list.

Google Obtains A Wireless Electric Car Charger

Google has been making some grave headway into option transportation. From the automated-robot car to an all-electric car sharing plan.

Now the company is the first to install a new wireless EV charging station.

Installed at the Google’s Mountain View headquarters, the charging station was developed by Virginia-based Evatran, and works without any outlets or chords. An EV has to drive over a special accusing pad and gets motorized up.

The system fundamentally uses inductive charging to work. An adapter is attached to each electric vehicle and when the car pulls up to the parking spot, the charging block adjusts to bring into line with the adapter and starts charging. Charging occurs from the connection of two magnetic coils. To start with, Google has set up one of the cars in its EV fleet to work with the wireless setup.

To give you a broader idea of how inductive charging works, the system is at present used to charge cell phones and electric toothbrushes.

Wired reports that a New Zealand startup Halo IPT is pursuing similar technology which would allow electric cars to charge while in motion.

Geneva Motor Show 2011

Jaguar Land Rover shines, but is the electric car the star?

As a 110m steeplechaser, Colin Jackson was adept at splendidly overcoming barriers.

It was fitting therefore that the former world record holder was Master of Ceremonies on Tuesday for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) as the lavishness car maker revealed two more new models – the sporty Jaguar XKR-S and a prototype diesel hybrid Range Rover – at the Geneva Motor Show.

JLR is a revitalized company. Carl Peter-Forster, boss of parent company Tata Motors, spoke on Tuesday of a new manufacturing facility in India, the Jaguar and Land Rover brand directors hinted at thrilling new product ranges, and Ralf Speth, the JLR chief executive, long-established the company was hiring 2,500 new workers in the UK to meet booming demand across the world.

Just two years ago, JLR was asking the Government for financial aid, now it is close to making annual profits of £1bn.

Jackson’s presence, intended to add some razzmatazz to the press conference, highlights the new confidence in the company.

Ratan Tata, watching next to a packed crowd, smiled throughout. The questions about his $2.3bn (£1.4bn) acquisition of JLR in 2008 have faded.

JLR’s achievement has helped to build an electric mood in Geneva, with other British-based manufacturers at the centre of it. Not only are there a vast array of new low carbon vehicles, but there is a buzz among farm out.

There are more people at the show and more new cars being revealed, a sign of the returning investment in the industry. As well as JLR, Rolls-Royce revealed its first electric car while Nissan’s low-carbon drive has its Sunderland plant at the centre and Toyota, focusing again on new models rather than a recall crisis, is state publicly that one in five cars it sells in the UK by 2012 will be hybrids.

However, behind closed doors, there are also murmurs of anxiety.

Doubts remain about whether consumers will in fact pay for electric cars, while companies complain of rivals offering hazardously high discounts to grab market share in Europe, and raw material costs are tall. The dark days of 2009 are over, but there are still many snag car makers must overcome.

TSA Recognized for Diversity

Three national magazines recognized TSA for its diversity in hiring practices. Recent editions of the Hispanic Network Magazine, the Black EOE Journal, and the Professional Woman’s Magazine featured TSA among other government and law enforcement agencies.

The 2010 Best of the Best issue of the Hispanic Network Magazine listed TSA among more than 150 government, academic, private and law enforcement groups, and DHS components, selected by its readers. The magazine also ranked TSA in two other categories, including the Top Diversity Employers for Hispanics and Top 50 Government & Law Enforcement Agencies for Hispanics.

The 2010 Yearbook issue of the Black EOE Journal and the 2010 Best of the Best issue of the Professional Woman’s Magazine both ranked TSA among other DHS components in its Top 50 Government & Law Enforcement Agencies for African Americans and Top 50 Government & Law Enforcement Agencies for Women, respectively. The Professional Woman’s Magazine also featured TSA in its two other lists, Top Diversity Employers for Women and Reader’s Choice, among approximately 150 private and government employers.

“TSA prides itself on the diversity of its workforce and we appreciate being recognized among other private, government and law enforcement agencies from across the country,” said Special Counselor Kimberly Walton.

As of 2011, the TSA workforce is made up of approximately 21 percent African Americans; nearly 15 percent Hispanics and just over 6 percent of other ethnicities, including American Indian, Asian, Native Hawaiian and others.

Michelin to hike tire prices

Michelin has announced today that the company plans to increase prices in Europe across all tire varieties in the near future because of raw material costs. Prices will be raised for all brands and across all market sections by an average of 5%.

  • In the Motorcycle and Scooter tire segment in Europe, prices will be raised by up to 7.5%. The increase will be put into practice as from March 1, 2011.
  • In the Earthmover tire segment in Europe, prices will be raised by up to 7.5%. The increase will take effect as from March 1, 2011 and will concern most European markets.
  • For new and retreaded Truck tires, the increase will average 7% in Europe and will be put into practice slowly between March 1 and April 1, 2011.
  • Prices for Agricultural tires in replacement markets in Europe will be raised by an average of 4%. These increases will be slowly put into practice between April 1 and May 1, 2011.
  • In the Passenger Car and Small Truck tire segment, prices will be raised for all brands and across all market segments in Europe (summer and winter tires) by an average of 5%. These increases will be slowly applied between April 1 and June 1, 2011.
